Off The Beaten Path...

Summer is upon us, and there are countless things to do in South Beach/Mission Bay. There are some obvious choices like SF MOMA, Yerba Buena Gardens, AT&T Park and the Farmers Market at the Ferry Building. All are great places to spend some time. Here are a few places that you may walk right by but you may have missed:

Café 24 at Bakar Fitness Center

Recently opened (just in time for the World Cup), the most recent addition to the phenomenal fitness and recreation center is Café 24. Open daily, they serve fantastic food and it opens onto a lush quad perfect for relaxing. In combination with the fitness center, this is quickly becoming an amazing resource for families and residents of Mission Bay and Potrero Hill.

South Park

While many know the location, few have actually spent time relaxing in the park.  A sunny oasis tucked between cafés, homes and small businesses, this is a perfect spot to relax in the grass and have lunch (like Caffé Centro, The Butler and the Chef and South Park Cafe) or read the morning paper. It can be crowded during the week as many enjoy lunch in the park, but tends to be quiet on the weekends (another kid-friendly spot as there’s a swing set and sandbox).

3rd and Townsend

Dwarfed by the Safeway and the Beacon, the western side of Townsend and 3rd Street is lined with several great local businesses. Victors and Primo Patio are great lunch options, both offering outside seating to enjoy the sun. Guitar Solo is also on the block and is highly regarded as one of the best local guitar shops in the city. It’s a part of South Beach / SOMA you tend to walk by, so be sure to STOP and enjoy!

Bike Terry Francois St

This is a great little bike trip from AT&T Park to The Ramp. It’s very short and easy, and one can see the changes coming to the Mission Bay area. Scenery once consisted of empty lots, but is now made up of well designed campus buildings and grass knolls. It’s especially fun on the return trip when the Giants are in town as the ballpark, Bay and crowds offer great vistas along the short ride.

21st Amendment Brewery

OK, technically this isn’t off the beaten path, But if you enjoy the sights and sounds of everything listed above, there’s nothing better than enjoying a locally brewed beer to finish the day.
