Neighborhood
Cow Hollow was named for the dairy farms and gardens that populated the area in the 1800s. Now Cow Hollow real estate consists of grand homes, like those in Pacific Heights, and Victorian and Edwardian flats and apartments.
These settings draw many wealthy inhabitants from Pacific Heights and the Marina District. This makes for a pleasant mix of young and old who stroll through the main shopping area, Union Street.
When you visit, get ready to spend your money at the many well-appointed boutiques. Consider the Blue Jeans Bar, Uko, Bulo Shoes or Stuart Moore. For the home, stop by Z Gallerie or Atys (an Urban Bay favorite). If you’re looking for a little beautification, there’s no shortage of spas (Novella) or cosmetics purveyors (Sephora, Mac). It all comes together at the Union Street Festival every year.
You can’t visit the neighborhood without a little bite to eat. Betelnut Pejiu Wu is a Cow Hollow establishment, as is Perry’s, Left at Albuquerque, Liverpool Lil’s, Rose’s Café, and the neighborhood secret, Brazen Head.
Cow Hollow is known for its bars. Bar None, Blue Light and now notorious Bus Stop are classic destinations. The HiFi Lounge is a great place to dance, and Nectar and Bacchus wine bars offer more downbeat settings. Beware of the Bermuda Triangle (so named by Herb Caen), located at Greenwich and Fillmore Streets. It is made up of the City Tavern, Eastside West, and Balboa Café (and stop by the adjacent MatrixFillmore).
With elegant homes, stunning views and posh shopping, there are few neighborhoods more sought after than Cow Hollow.
